No longer a hidden gem among the locals, the Small Königsstuhl offers the perfect conditions for a short yet rewarding summit hike. The brief and straightforward path, along with a manageable elevation gain, also make it suitable for sunrise or sunset excursions.
Starting from the last parking lot of the Karneralm Alpine Village (1900m), a wide forest road initially leads through the chalet village. Follow the signage here and begin by hiking gently downhill.
After about 20 minutes, a narrow trail veers to the right, following the Arno Trail, ascending over alpine meadows. During the summer months, berry pickers will find plenty to indulge in here. At the end of this trail, you reach a col where you follow the fence to the right and then ascend to the summit via slightly steeper grassy paths, staying on the marked trail.
At the summit, there's often a stronger wind, so a windproof jacket is recommended in every season. Summit conquerors are rewarded with a magnificent panorama encompassing all the renowned peaks of Lungau, spanning from the Lower to the High Tauern and extending all the way to Italy.
The descent follows the ascent route. For those familiar with the area, an alternative option is descending through the unmarked Bear's Hollow.
